Born in the Deep South in 1950 she is the third child of Nellie May, a beautiful red-head with deep emotional problems. Denice’s mother suffers from severe depression and struggles with every breath to raise her five children Janice, the hippie; Pam, the beauty queen; Denice, the tomboy, and the two youngest, Lee Ann and Charlie. Charles, the father, is a con man, habitual liar, and self-proclaimed ladies’ man. He makes a buck anyway he can including coffee salesman, bootlegging, running a whorehouse, and a doctor. His lifestyle continually brings chaos and heartbreak to the home and drags them to the depths when he molests one of his children. On a cold morning Charles wakes Denice to help him plant Plastic Tulips In The Winter. “Daddy” she ask, “Why are we planting plastic tulips in the winter?” He answered her, “Because, when people drive by and see our tulips, we will be the only ones that can grow tulips in the winter.” Denice learns that a fatherless child grows up thinking all things are possible, but nothing is safe. She searches for the answer to the question “Momma, are we there yet?” Get ready to laugh but keep the kleenex close by as you take this journey with Denice. As you read this coming of age book. Denice Vickers comes off as an unlikable main character. She is hard to have sympathy for due to the self-serving feel of the book overall. It seems like it was written to pat herself on the back. She tends to gloss over the real events of the book and focus on the "happy, positive, feel good" stuff. It just doesn't resonate with my struggle as a christian or as a woman having been raised in poverty around the same times in the south. I can't identify with her experience.
Didn't keep me interested. Very child like writing.
This is an easy read as the author engages us in tales of her troubled childhood, adventurous teenage years, and her Christ-filled adulthood. Unfortunately, however, the book is very poorly edited, and the resulting error-filled text makes for an awkward reading experience. Still, it is impressive with the rich and loving relationships of family, the power and commitment of dedicated Christians, and the overall belief that each of us determines his own fate through our chosen attitude and beliefs. The power of love and a strong belief in God bring peace, contentment, happiness.
The book began at an early point in the author's childhood, right in the thick of the action. From the very beginning we see that the typical idea of family and home were not what the author, her sisters and her mother experienced. Growing up in the 1950s, things were handled in very different ways and the people who had to deal with them had no other alternative but to weather the storms and make the best of what they had. It was a cycle repeated for the author until her mother felt it would be easier to bear the weight of social stigma than to remain in a place to constantly be beaten emotionally, physically and mentally.
When I purchased the book from , I had a few reservations but was intrigued by what was written about the characters in the blurb on the sale page. I truly grew to love the characters toward the middle and end of the book. The beginning was a little difficult to find someone to root for because everyone was floundering under the weight of life and its ceaseless changes. The honest and candid way in which the author writes about her own faults and flaws is refreshing. She is who she is and nothing more than that. Presenting both the good and bad times in her life made the story compelling as well as exciting. It became much more than a simple glimpse into someone's life by the end of the book.
As compelling and wonderful I found the book to be, there were some serious editing issues that distracted me as I was reading. I would have given a much higher rating but the number of punctuation, grammar and spelling mistakes was more than I could overlook. Even taking into account the tone in which the book is written, there were simply too many. It saddens me that such a wonderful story is hampered by that. I believe if the book were given a thorough editing, it would definitely be near the top of my recommendation list.
Overall, it is a real and compelling life story that did keep me turning the pages. If you are a reader of life stories or testimonies of faith beyond measure, this is one book that you'll want to have on your to-be-read list.
Frequent typos were annoying.
A poignant memoir in the first half turned into religious fervor in the second half.
The story is very inspirational and moving but like others have said, lacks proper spelling, punctuation, and editing. I would love to read the book again after a new edition has been published.
It’s a good book and an easy read. A little to much back n forth. Author doesn’t stay on topic. A lot of grammatical mistakes. Author might want to have someone pen the next book for her.
